Tomatillo(Green Tomato) Kootu

Tomatillos(also called green tomatoes) are cheap and available easily in any grocery store. I love its tangy flavor. This kootu can be made quickly and had with rice or roti.

Ingredients:
To pressure cook:
4-5 small tomatillos(husk should be peeled)
1 green chilli
Moong dhal-1/3 cup
Shredded/frozen coconut-2 tbsp
Hing-a pinch
Turmeric powder-a pinch
Salt

Seasoning:
Oil-1 tsp
Jeera-1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Red chilli-2
Curry leaves-a few

Method:
Pressure cook all of the above ingredients for 2 whistles.
Do the seasoning and simmer the mixture for 2 minutes.
Serve with rice or roti.

  1. wow! ur tomatillo kootu looks yummy on a bed of soft fluffy rice. what's missing is a vegetable poriyal, some pickles, papads & u r good to go. will try this recipe soon.thanx

    you are right. Tomatillo has a tangy flavor.It tastes good. Kootu looks yummy.As Sweetbites said,some pickles makes it great.

  5. Kalakkara! Have used tomatillos in only green salsa, and that too learnt from my Spanish friend. Not even my own idea...
    Kootu sounds perfect. Why don't you try sending it to the "original recipes" event by Lore?

  6. yr kootu is wonderful and delish. My mom prepare this very nice and tasty but in diff way. we can use red tomatoes too.

    havent tasted tomatillo yet :( shud try..
    n reg ur doubt with burfi..yeah it can be prepared on stove top also..but stirring stirring...I get irritated :)

    The oven should have an instruction guide, no?
    If you are scared to do it the first time, call the maintenance people and ask them for help. Most of the cases they are happy to help.
